The Flowers and not the Weeds

There are days when it seems as though you could go through the English alphabet from A-Z, and apply a problem in our society, or world for that matter, that could fit every letter, if not more than one word per letter (xenophobia anyone?). How do we make sense of what can become an overwhelming sense of resignation that threatens our psyche, with so many problems and so few solutions? Perhaps our perspective needs a bit of readjusting. I do not suggest that we view the world solely through rose-colored glasses, as though that will ease our minds. There can be more than one way.

Too frequently we focus only on the weeds in our garden. No matter how many there might be, when we focus on the weeds we lose sight of the flowers. What are the flowers? They are the good works that so many people attend to every single day of their lives, generally without the slightest of recognition. These people are really important role models and heroes for all of us, and they work anonymously. Each of us has the potential to be one, if only we would focus on the flowers.

What is the passion that drives you? Where might your interests lie? What do you care deeply about? How might your skill sets align with your answer(s)? Where could you turn, or whom might you contact, to take the next step? How can I transform myself from weed remover to flower promoter?

Start by trying to answer my questions, and see if any clarity develops. If it does, perhaps you will see your path. For many, this might require further research and study, and that too is good. I am here to be your tour guide in your journey called life, to help you through the weeds to find the flowers. You can lay down a tarp that promises to block out the weeds, but we all know that does not always work well. The weeds still find a way to pierce the tarp and insist on being present. But if you overwhelm the garden with flowers, the weeds have no room to grow. So too with the H word. Surrounding it with love will squeeze it out of the garden, as there will be no place for it to flourish.

So fellow gardeners, time to get working. Focus on the flowers so that there is no room for the weeds. May your garden blossom.
