Another!

Another school shooting. Shock, horror, anguish and outrage. The usual quotes. Thoughts and prayers. Fade from consciousness. Repeat. So plays out the scenario in our nation’s capital with every school shooting. We have come full circle in some sort of macabre numbers, 20 years since the shooting in Columbine, 7 miles away and 0 Congressional action.

How horrific it is that an entire generation of children in our country grow up with the words “active shooter” and “school lockdown” in their vocabulary. How unthinkable that so many families continue to be permanently scarred. How unbelievable that two young men die heroically. How disgraceful that nothing gets done in DC.

I would think that there is enough empirical data to be able to convene a Blue Ribbon Panel to review what we know so as to create a solid set of recommendations, funded by our government, to provide a safe educational environment for our students. Is that not what we elect those who go to Washington to do? Yet they have failed us.

Individual school systems are forced to come up with local solutions, which by itself is sensible. But given the national nature of school shootings, shouldn’t it be a national issue? The most frequent emanation from our elected officials is H speech. Republicans speak ill of Democrats; Democrats speak ill of Republicans. Democratic candidates for their party’s Presidential nomination speak H speech about other candidates as though we are watching piranha feeding time at the National Aquarium. And Rome continues to burn while they fiddle. If you want to be in the sandbox, play nicely. Stop throwing sand and share your toys.

We must continue to demand that our elected officials restore civil discourse and craft legislation to benefit all citizens. Isn’t that what we the people elected them to do? How many children must die? My heart is finding it increasingly difficult to heal.
