We have been busy and productive in the winter months! Our Jerusalem class (2nd-4th graders) are becoming comfortable Hebrew readers. I am always so pleased when I stop in the classroom and see them busy at work, reading Hebrew, engaging in Hebrew games and enthusiastic learners.
We had a very special World Wide Wrap again this year with the Men’s Club. Students in 5th - 7th grade participated with the support of their teacher Stephen Weiss. Our 5th graders participated in the Build a Pair program where they learned about and made their own “mock” t’fillin to wear at the World Wide Wrap. Our older students wrote creative raps and shared them enthusiastically during breakfast.
Tu Bishvat was marked this year with a congregational Tu Bishvat Seder led by Rabbi Myers. We joined together with New Light Congregation and filled the New Light Sanctuary. There were plenty of different foods to try, songs to sing and stories to hear. Our madrichim helped put posters on all the walls and we made some special tree centerpieces. Prior to the Seder, Rabbi Myers taught our TLC students Tu Bishvat songs that we sang together during the Seder. We enjoyed being part of this multi-generational and joint synagogue event.
Purim arrived at the end of February! The carnival was it’s usual fun with children going home with plenty of prizes. We had a large crowd for Purim eve as we enjoyed a pasta dinner, a Megillah reading with fun voices, followed by a Purim shtick put on by Rabbi Myers and congregants. Our students convinced their parents to stay late so they could watch the shtick - it was very fun for all!!
Since we had to keep the fun going, we began March with our annual pajama day! Thank you to our Men’s Club and Irwin Harris for making delicious pancakes! We enjoyed fruit and chocolate milk as well.
We turn now to learning about and preparing for Passover. It’s a time for physical and spiritual cleaning. We will take some time to reflect on where we are and also looking forward. Thank you for your continued support of our cherished students.
We continue to collect toiletry items for the refugee families through the Jewish Family and Children’s Service. We took another load of these supplies and winter items to them in February. They have expressed how helpful these items are and also how special it makes the families feel to receive them from local school families.
