Understanding and Managing Stress for Better Mental and Physical Health

Dr. Bruce Rabin, aka Dr. Stress, was the guest speaker at the Tree on November 12 for a Sunday morning breakfast hosted jointly by the Men’s Club and Sisterhood. His topic was “Understanding and Managing Stress for Better Mental and Physical Health”. Dr. Rabin, who graduated from the State University of New York at Buffalo with a PhD and MD, is currently Professor of Pathology and Psychiatry at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. His research on the effects of stress on health and the immune system is world renowned and has resulted in over 300 scientific publications. Rather than focusing on the cure of disease, Dr. Rabin has instead emphasized the importance of disease prevention, keeping healthy people healthy as they age. Since the immune system has a key role in human health and stress is known to be a major factor in the function of the immune system, Dr. Rabin believes that heath and long life can be promoted by minimizing stress. In his presentation, he presented many ways to do that, such as by exercise, social interactions and attending religious services. Preceding Dr. Rabin’s presentation, Rabbi Myers led the morning minyan and spoke on stress in the Torah from Adam to Moses.

Dr. Rabin generously provided this document in order to further teach us to cope with stress and thereby improve our chances of living a healthy life.
