Introducing our New TLC Teachers

Summer is winding down and our students are all returning back to school. We begin our TLC school year on Sunday, September 10. Our school calendar is available on our website and Google calendar.

I’m thrilled to welcome everyone back to school, and welcome Rabbi Myers to get to know our students and families. Veteran teachers, Alex Speck and Stephen Weiss will be returning to teach our children.

I’d like to introduce our our new Mishpacha & Me facilitator as well as two new Hebrew teachers (one for Sundays and one for Tuesdays).

Carin Bendas is returning to facilitate our new Mispacha (family) & Me program.

Carin Bendas is thrilled to return to the TOL*OLS family after a three-year hiatus, during which she received her MFA in acting from the University of South Carolina. Carin has been working in Jewish Education since she was a teenager and has taught every age group, from toddlers to graduate school. Carin is currently an instructor of Movement at Point Park University, where she works with her husband, fellow actor and teacher, Ben Blazer. Along with the support of TLC Principal Karen Morris, Program Director Alex Speck, and Rabbi Hazzan Jeffrey Myers, Carin is very much looking forward to creating some incredibly fun and interactive educational experiences for our upcoming year of family programming!

Arielle Hertzberg is teaching Hebrew and Israel on Sundays. Arielle will teach the Jerusalem class (2nd-4th grade) and our Tel Aviv/Yafo - 7th grade.

Arielle is originally from Lower Merion, a suburb of Philadelphia. During high school she received a Jewish teaching certificate from Gratz College. Arielle is currently a Junior at the University of Pittsburgh studying Psychology and is on the pre-Physical Therapy track. This past summer Arielle was an intern on the OnWard Israel program and worked in a physical therapy lab at Tel Aviv University. Arielle loves to sing and is involved in Hillel's premier a cappella group, Hillelujah as a soprano and is the public relations coordinator for the group. Growing up Arielle was surrounded by Jewish life through Jewish day school, Camp Ramah, and her synagogue. When she came to Pittsburgh, it was second nature to become involved in the Jewish community. Arielle is looking forward to a successful year!

Jan Barkley is teaching Hebrew on Tuesdays to our Jerusalem class (2nd - 4th grade) and to our Haifa Class (5th/6th grade)

Jan moved to Pittsburgh three months ago from Highland Park, IL. She has been engaged and involved in Jewish education and synagogue life her entire career. Jan values inclusion, communication and team building. Jan’s goal this year is to make Hebrew learning enjoyable and keep our children engaged. Most recently Jan was a Hebrew educator at North Shore Congregation Israel in Glencoe, Illinois and Am Shalom in Glencoe, Illinois. Jan is also trained and has implemented the Hebrew Through Movement program. In addition to being an educator, Jan was the former Executive Director of the Aspen Jewish Congregation in Aspen, Colorado. Jan looks forward to meeting our families and children this year!

Looking forward to seeing everyone on September 10 at 9:00 AM.

Our first Mishpacha & Me session is on Sunday, September 17 from 10:15 - 11:45 AM.
